An Uninterruptable Power Supply or UPS provides a battery-based backup for electronic equipment. Under normal operation, the equipment utilizes a normal power cord, plugged into a standard electric outlet, for its electrical power. A UPS is designed to continue that electrical power during times of power failure. To make this work smoothly, normal electrical power must be monitored continually, and the power source switched seamlessly to the UPS when power fails.
CheckUPS II was a software suite to maintain this constant monitoring and used at Grinnell's MathLAN with the HP 715 hardware of the mid 1990s. Developed by Best Power, the instruction manual begins, "Best Power CheckUPS II software provides sophisticated UPS monitoring and orderly unattended system shutdown for most popular operating systems." Since this monitoring is designed for various operating systems, the system comes on several media, for installation in a range of machines. The media included here include:
CheckUPS II also came with two adapter plugs to help connect components. These plugs include
