IBM Flowcharting Template

Flowcharting was a popular way to describe algorithms and processes, particularly in the 1970s. Each type of operation was represented by a specific shape, as described by several national standards. For example, "processing, annotation" was placed in a rectangle, a magnetic tape was represented by a circle, a perforated tape by a rectangular region with wavy sides, and punched cards by a rectangle with a corner removed.

The IBM Flowcharting Template, Form X20-8020, collected many of these standard shapes in an easily used format for use in specifying algorithms and programs. This item dates from approximately 1972.

The paper cover contains summary information regarding symbols and their meaning.
