The Motorola TELE T-A-C 250 represents a first generation cellular telephone. The hand held device communicated over an analog cellular network (now called a 1G network). Over time, analog communication has been replaced by digital cellular networks, making analog communication obsolete.
In rural areas, cellular telephones were particularly popular with people who regularly traveled over long distances between cities or in areas of low population. Mobile telephones provided a measure of security and safety in the case of a vehicle breakdown in an isolated area.
This telephone was purchased by Joyce Stern in 1998, when she was commuting to work.
