The TANDY 102 was manufactured in 1986 to replace TANDY 100 which is considered the world's first laptop computers. It has a full-size keyboard. It also uses Microsoft BASIC programming language, word processing software, telecommunications software and a built-in 300 baud modem.

This particular Tandy 102 Computer with external disk-drive was purchased by Beryl Clotfelter in 1987 for use in Grinnell-in-London. The GIL site had a printer to which the Tandy could be connected, and class hand-outs were prepared on the computer and then printed at the GIL office. Beryl also used this forerunner of the laptop computer for keeping notes while traveling.

The Tandy was immensly popular with journalists. They were able to write out their articles on the road on the Tandy's excellent keyboard, the through the 300 baud modem, send their articles through to the newspapers mainframe.
