Formerly in Grinnell College, copper cables were used to connect all the computers together for internet purposes. This proved to be a bad method because whenever there was a thunder-storm, the cable carried the electric charges from lightning and as a result of this, the motherboard burnt. In order to better the connection process, optical cables were used because they did not carry electric charges the way copper cables did.
