In 1994, Grinnell's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science upgraded its local area network, MathLAN, from Sun 3/50 computers to HP 712 computers. In the new configuration, users interacted directly with 55 Hewlett-Packard 712/60 workstations. These were connected to MathLAN and an HP 715/75 file server. For its day, the server had significant capacity with 8 gigabytes of storage capacity.
The HP 715/75 file server utilized several disk drives, including this hard drive. These drives implemented the Small Computer System Interface, or SCSI, for transferring data between disk and computers.
