CS Table 10/2/18: Grace Hopper 2018

This week at CS table we will hear from some of the students who attended the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing last week. We’ll discuss some of the keynotes they went to, hear about the other events happening at the conference, and talk about how to get the most out of professional and academic conferences like GHC or Tapia.

There is no assigned reading for this week’s discussion, but you may want to look at the conference schedule to see what kinds of events were happening.

Computer science table (CS Table) is a weekly meeting of Grinnell College community members (students, faculty, staff, etc.) interested in discussing topics related to computing and computer science. CS Table meets Tuesdays from 12:00–12:45pm in JRC 224C (inside the Marketplace). Contact the CS faculty for the weekly reading. Students on meal plans, faculty, and staff are expected to cover the cost of their meals. Visitors to the College and students not on meal plans can charge their meals to the department (sign in at the Marketplace front desk).

CS Table 9/25/18: Takeaways from Tapia 2018

Students, faculty, and staff who attended the 2018 ACM Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference will report on various aspects of the conference, from the keynotes to the job fair. Since FAT AI (fair, accountable, transparent) was a topic of a number of sessions, we will likely cover some perspectives on that topic.

In preparation for CS Table, you may find it useful to review the schedule for the conference.

CS Table 2/27/18: SIGCSE Debrief

Folks returning from last week's SIGCSE 2018 will be discussing experiences at the conference. This was a technical symposium for the Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE) of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

The reading for this week is to browse the SIGCSE 2018 website. In particular, you can browse the full schedule to get a sense of what the conference covered. If a particular session seems interesting to you, feel free to mention it on Tuesday and we can see if one of our panelist also visited that session and can share their thoughts!

This week’s CS Table will feature a panel of students that attended the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) of Women in Computing last week. They will share their experiences at the conference as well as give advice on how to get the most out of your conference experience if you attend such a conference in the future.

CS Table: Debrief on Grace Hopper Celebration

This Friday at CS Table, we will debrief on the 2014 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. We will be joined by alumna guest Donna House Lohmeier '96, Senior Project Manager at Qualcomm Life.

You may have seen media coverage of Satya Nadella's advice that women not ask for raises, which he quickly retracted. This brief NYT opinion piece explains why he was wrong: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/11/upshot/why-microsofts-nadella-is-wrong-about-women-and-raises.html

At the conference, there was far more discussion of the Male Allies panel. Here's a first-person report, which is admittedly biased: http://readwrite.com/2014/10/09/technology-sexism-male-allies-grace-hopper-celebration

And the aftermath: https://storify.com/catehstn/ghcmanwatch-mark-2

Please join us on Friday to discuss these events and our experiences at the conference.

All students are welcome to attend the discussion; you need not have attended GHC and you need not self-identify as a woman in computing.
