A discussion of Summer Opportunities in Computer Science is presented by Professor Samuel A. Rebelsky and the other faculty of the department of computer science.

If you enjoy computer science (or at least computer programming), summer is an opportunity to explore new approaches, to develop new skills, and perhaps even to make some money. But what kinds of things can you do? While students tend to focus on a few options (e.g., internships and research with faculty), a wide variety of opportunities are available. In this session, we will discuss goals you might set for the summer and some opportunities that can help you achieve those goals. Then during winter break you can be starting applications and preparing to build your portfolios.

Note that this is *not* the presentation of summer research offered within this department; this is a broad overview of the kinds of opportunities one might pursue off-campus.

Summer Internship and Research Experience in Computer Science
Already, many of the big companies are reaching out for internship opportunities for next semester. At this week's Thursday Extra, Toby Baratta '17, Alex Mitchell '17, Ying Long '17, Larry Boateng Asante '17, Sooji Son '18, and Maddie Kirwin '19 will go over how they got their respective internships and research opportunities, the process and planning, what they did during their experience, and whether they liked what they were doing. They will spend the first half of the session discussing what they all did and how, and the second half answering questions about their positions and experiences. Come with questions!

On Thursday, December 4, in Noyce 3821, Professor Samuel A. Rebelsky and the other faculty of the Department of Computer Science will present the department's annual discussion of summer opportunities in CS:

It may be hard to believe given the forthcoming sub-freezing temperatures, but it's about time to starting thinking about what you're going to do this coming summer (and maybe even in subsequent summers). If you enjoy computer science (or at least computer programming), summer is an opportunity to explore new approaches, to develop new skills, and perhaps even to make some money. Do you get all of your news about CS at Grinnell from the Web site, from class announcements, or from conversations with friends? If so, you may be missing out on some things. The department maintains a mailing list of folks interested in CS at Grinnell. In addition to the announcements you see here, the mailing list includes notes from the Student Educational Policy Committee (SEPC) about events they've scheduled; information about internships, jobs, and other opportunities that the CS faculty have received and want to pass along; and a variety of other useful bits of information. I expect that Grinnell's student ACM chapter will also use the mailing list to communicate their many exciting new activities.

All CS majors should automatically be on the list, but it is also open to all interested students. If you would like to be on the "csstudents" mailing list, send an email to Sam Rebelsky, rebelsky@grinnell.edu, and he'll get you added.

On Thursday, November 7, Chike Abuah 2014, Aaltan Ahmad 2014, Nediyana Daskalova 2014, Erik Opavsky 2014, Kim Spasaro 2014, Daniel Torres 2015, and Brennan Wallace 2016 will conduct a panel discussion on summer experiences in computer science. The participants will describe their internship experiences, ranging from start-ups to Apple to research and more.

On Thursday, October 18, Dilan Ustek 2014, Aditi Roy 2013, Tolu Alabi 2013, Maijid Moujaled 2014, and David Cowden 2013 will discuss the technical internships they have done at Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Pikuzone, and Iowa Health System. They will talk about their experiences at big technical companies, a start-up, and the IT department of a health organization. Come to learn about these various experiences and what to do in order to get them!

Our final Thursday Extra of the semester will be on December 8.

It's time to begin thinking about applications for summer internships and full-time jobs. Associate Dean and Director of Career Development Mark Peltz and CS alum Ian Atha '09 will join the CS faculty and CS SEPC for a workshop on crafting résumés geared toward positions in computing. We will discuss résumé strategies, tips, look at several examples, and answer your questions. We welcome and encourage students at all levels to attend.

At 4:15 on Thursday, December 2, in Noyce 3821, Jordan Shkolnick 2011 will describe her internship experience from last summer:

I will discuss my summer internship as a Software Development Engineer in Test with Microsoft Office. I will discuss the work I did during this internship and present an overview of Microsoft Internships, including the application process and the three job roles.

On Thursday, October 7, in Noyce 3821, Shitanshu Aggarwal 2011 will describe the software-development project on which he worked last summer. He writes:

During the Summer of 2010, I interned at Amazon's online grocery business, Amazon Fresh. It is an experimental project and is currently being tested in the Seattle area in Washington. In this talk, I will describe how an online grocery store operates, the computational problems that arise in their operation, and my contributions to Amazon's project.
